5 South African Food Favourites with a Woody’s Bacon Twist

If there is a common denominator that unites all South Africans, it’s the fact that we all love- as in genuinely adore- our food.  And with #HeritageMonth in full swing and #BraaiDay on the cards, there’s no better time to celebrate the wonderful meals and sides that bring us together. And while we are all for giving kudos to some local staples, we think we should highlight some South African food favourites with a Woody’s Bacon twist.

Almost every meal or snack can be taken to the next level with the addition of the smoky, savoury goodness of Woody’s bacon- whether it’s a rack of succulent ribs or a batch of chicken wings.

Grilled Mielies with Bacon Butter

If you’ve gathered around the coals for a braai (there is a 99.9% chance that you have!) it’s very likely that you’ve popped some corn on the grill, right? And while these lovely vegetable are simply delicious when braaied, we think there is an extra taste sensation that can be experienced, thanks to the addition of some bacon butter. This creamy and spicy butter serves as the perfect contrast to the sweetness of the mielies. Here’s how you can make your own Grilled Mielies with Bacon Butter.

Bacon and Cheese Braaiwors with Sesame Pap and Chakalaka

If you don’t have a coil or two of homegrown sausage on the grill, you are simply not braaing like a boss. And if you want to show off, then you can change it up with some Woody’s Bacon and Cheese Braaiwors. But what’s a headline act without scintillating co-stars? In this case, it’s sesame pap and chakalaka, for that added authentic South African experience. Check out our Bacon and Cheese Braaiwors with Sesame Pap and Chakalaka recipe.

Chinese Smoked Pork Ribs

For another exciting mix of flavours and cultures, we suggest this Asian-inspired smoky and zingy dish.  Of course, there’s nothing wrong with straight-up barbeque ribs, but why not get creative this #HeritageMonth by adding soy, Hoisin, ginger, garlic and citrus into the mix and end up with these out-of-this-world Chinese Smoked Pork Ribs. P.S: You might also want to try these Tequila Ribs with Crushed Baby Potatoes.

Bacon-Wrapped Chicken Drumsticks

Ask almost any South African what their favourite meat is, and there’s a good chance that chicken will come out on top. And, believe it or not, there’s a way to make drumsticks even tastier than they already are. How do you ask? Well, with the addition of bacon, of course! TV chef Clement Pedro shared his delicious Bacon-Wrapped Chicken Drumsticks recipe.

Smoked Pork Belly and Peppadew Sosaties

What would a braai day be without a few sosaties on the grill? It would be quite a sad affair if you ask us.  So, since some kebabs are braai essentials, why not step out of your comfort zone a bit and give these tasty combos a try?  And for that extra zing, a fresh Thai salad is the perfect accompaniment for these Smoked Pork Belly and Peppadew Sosaties that will, undoubtedly, be a hit around the braai this summer.

So go ahead and try one, two or all of the above recipes to make it a #HeritageMonth to remember! Also, be sure to check out how to Prep and Clean Your Braai Like a Boss to make sure your foundation is as solid as ever!
